The University of California, Davis, School of Medicine, Department of Public Health Sciences invites applications for a faculty position at the Adjunct Assistant Professor level with expertise in public health and tobacco policy research. This is an adjunct appointment, supported by grant funds, with negotiable teaching responsibilities. Successful applicants must have a Ph.D. or Dr.P.H. in public health, environmental health, epidemiology, economics, sociology, anthropology or a related field; or an M.D. with an accompanying public health graduate degree. The candidate must have experience developing and conducting population-based research and a focus on studying the impact of or determinants of public health policies. Special preference will be given to applicants with publications record on tobacco policy; demonstrated ability to examine the impact of tobacco policy changes in health behavior and health outcomes; and, familiarity with California-specific population health surveys and data sources.

The mission of the Department of Public Health Sciences is to improve the health of people through population-based approaches by developing and evaluating educational programs, conducting epidemiologic research, engaging in public service and developing policy and other translational outcomes. The Department covers a broad area of public health domains with a focus on health promotion and disease and injury prevention, occupational and environmental health, cancer, health care policy, aging, ethical issues, reproductive, women’s, children’s, rural, minority, immigrant and global health.

The position will be located within the Department of Public Health Sciences, and the successful candidate will be expected to participate in established tobacco research activities, including collaborative research with the California Tobacco Control Program and the Tobacco-Related Disease Research Program. One example is a policy surveillance project which involves attorneys, information specialists, and public health experts who search for and score local tobacco control policies in California. Policy scores are disseminated to the public health practice community and are used in research to examine their public health impact. Interdisciplinary research is central to this position, as this work is conducted in collaboration with university researchers in medicine, toxicology, public health, and law, as well as community advocates and state-level leaders.

Among other responsibilities, the faculty member hired for this position will:

  • Strengthen the Public Health Sciences Department’s policy research expertise and promote interdisciplinary collaboration in the area of public health policy research, including tobacco policy.
  • Develop and teach courses in public health for MPH and PhD students.
  • Establish a research agenda and obtain extramural funding to foster the development of an emphasis in focused areas of public health policy research.
  • Conceive, prepare and submit grant and contract proposals to support her/his research agenda;
  • Participate in limited service activities including committee appointments, public or community service;
  • Work cooperatively and collegially within a diverse environment.

Candidates will also participate in professional activities at local, state, regional, and national levels including disseminating knowledge through peer-reviewed publications, participation in and presentation at interdisciplinary and scientific meetings, and professional academic outreach and engagement.

Research experience and a publication track record are required. Experience with extramurally funded projects documented by publications is preferred. The successful candidate should have experience teaching at the university level.
