Description

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of California, Davis invites applications for a qualified Junior Specialist. This position will be involved in interdisciplinary studies focusing on questions in molecular and cellular biology as related to infectious diseases and cancer.

General responsibilities include: The position of Junior Specialist has a narrow focus in a specialized area and provides technical or specialized expertise (e.g., with instrumentation and research equipment, or with research methods) in the planning and execution of a research project. Junior Specialists are required to be actively and significantly involved in publishable research activities, including reviewing journal articles and engaging in discussions on research and the interpretation of research results. Junior Specialists are also expected to participate in appropriate professional/technical societies or groups and other educational and research organizations as well as review research proposals, journal manuscripts, and publications as applicable related to their research area of expertise. The Junior Specialist will serve the public and University by mentoring students, interns, and volunteers on lab operations and projects.

The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal, communication, and decision-making skills; as well as the ability to work well independently and as part of a team. Ability to quickly gain knowledge and understanding to efficiently and effectively learn and perform the following tasks: 

  • Experience and skill in biological sample preparation for genomic and proteomic analysis.
  • Ability to carry out RNA, DNA, and protein extractions.
  • Basic skill or knowledge in PCR and RT-PCR.
  • Basic skill or knowledge in other assays such as ELISA and western blots
  • Basic skill or knowledge in mammalian cell cultures.
  • Ability to use aseptic techniques.
  • Background in molecular and cell biology is essential.
  • Ability to troubleshoot procedures and protocols and overcome technical difficulties.
  • Ability to collect and record data clearly and document procedures.

 • Ability to communicate clearly orally and in writing, to work together collaboratively and to work in general oversight but without requiring detailed supervision. 

  • Experience with Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint), Abobe Acrobat and other computer software as necessary.

Basic Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor degree in biological sciences or a related field with previous laboratory course experience.
  • Must have basic level understanding of Biological Sciences

 • Must have demonstrated proficiency with bench science activities, including but not limited to: dilution preparation, specimen handling, accurate measuring of chemicals, etc. 

  • Must respond timely to email and voicemail messages.

 • Must be attentive and reliable with various modes of communications (email, calls, texts, etc.) 

  • Must possess good inter-personal skills and be capable of working with a variety of personalities

PREFERRED 

  • Previous experience in immunoassay development (e.g., ELISA) is helpful.

Salary: Step I - $39,500 annual, commensurate with qualifications and experience. Number of Positions Available: 1

Short-term 2-year maximum Exempt appointment, seasonal appointment based on the needs of the research project. Appointments may be made up to 100%.
