    The Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology at the University of California, Davis invites applications for a qualified Junior Specialist.

    This position will be involved in interdisciplinary studies focusing on questions in HIV/SIV pathogenesis. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, research in molecular aspects of HIV/SIV pathogenesis, participation in performing molecular techniques such as RNA/DNA extraction, Real Time PCR Assays, performing histology and immunochemistry, providing assistance in tissue processing, participation in animal studies under supervision, immunochemistry and imaging and cell cultures. The candidate will participate in performing or assisting in experiments to generate data and perform data analysis, and will receive training by post-doctoral fellows, senior researchers, and the principal investigator in order to participate in the design, collection, and interpretation of data by looking at the data gathered from the experiment that has produced the data and evaluate the information in order to consult with the PI and senior researchers. Laboratory maintenance and regulatory compliance include assisting senior researchers in the preparation of BUA and animal use protocols, maintenance of lab safety protocols, preparation of bacterial cell culture plates, management of specimen inventory, data input and storage, and maintaining an inventory of supplies and placing requests for orders to the business office. The candidate will be expected to attend lab meetings and when appropriate, will present data to their laboratory peers and will contribute to scholarly articles by providing their research findings, data, and write-ups on the work performed and may participate in writing manuscript portions in relation to their research findings. The candidate will review scholarly literature to improve or learn about methods for the project that are needed for ongoing projects and will participate in local conferences and joint lab meetings. The candidate will also provide University/public service by providing support in the over maintenance of the shared equipment in the department and mentor undergraduate students, guiding them in laboratory safety and training in work and data analysis.

    Basic Qualifications: Bachelor degree in Biological Sciences, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Immunology or a related field with prior laboratory experience.

    Preferred Qualifications: Coursework and/or experience to perform molecular biology techniques. Computer skills pertaining to scientific data entry and usage. Experience in developing or adapting experimental tools and assays. The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal, communication, and decision-making skills; as well as the ability to work well independently and as part of a team and will exhibit a professional approach to work and attention to detail.

    Salary Range: Step I - $18.26 per hour or Step II - $19.48 per hour, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

    RECRUITMENT DESCRIPTION

    This position will be involved in interdisciplinary studies focusing on questions investigating the behavioral and developmental characteristics of autism spectrum disorders in children and adolescents. The studies seek to characterize clinically significant subtypes of autism to develop targets for treatments, interventions, and services to improve quality of life for children with autism.

    The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal, communication, and decision-making skills; as well as the ability to work well independently and as part of a team. This candidate will work closely with the GAIN & BRAIN teams, including Dr. Christine Wu Nordahl (PI) and Dr. Brianna Heath (Project Manager). This position is full time, with flexible work hours sometimes requiring evening availability.

    General responsibilities include:

    RESEARCH ACTIVITY (80% EFFORT)

    • Assist in collection of study data including recruitment and scheduling of research participants, MRI scan preparation and acquisition, and administering expressive and receptive language assessments
    • Assist in data processing including scoring of behavioral assessments, MR imaging preprocessing, maintaining subject electronic medical record, tracking subject behavioral and medical data, and training of undergraduate volunteers in proper data entry protocols
    • Contribute to research publications by designing and pursuing research questions related to behavior and neurodevelopment in autism
    • Analyze data using statistical methods and programs and interpret results by comparing data from subjects with autism to those without, and contributing to the study goal of identifying subtypes of autism

    PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY (10% EFFORT)

    • Collaborate with senior research personnel by assisting with data analysis and literature review
    • Help prepare abstracts for scientific conference submissions under the mentorship of the research team, with the opportunity to present posters at meetings if accepted
    • Read, discuss, and interpret relevant journal articles to the project and present in the team’s journal club meetings
    • Attend weekly and monthly meetings with members of the research team to discuss study progress and protocol implementation

    UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE (10% EFFORT)

    • Attending community events such as Autism Speaks walks, children's fairs, and lectures and talking about our research with community members at these events
    • Participate in the University by volunteering at special events for families of kids with autism that participate in research studies at the MIND Institute
    • Provide interpretation of study measures to participating families including summarizing behavioral assessment results and coordinating with community physicians to provide radiological reports

    BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Bachelor’s degree* in Psychology, Neuroscience, or a related field with a minimum of 2 years experience in autism and imaging research
    • Experience or training in coordinating a research study, including recruitment of participants, scheduling, and running visits

    The Department of Internal Medicine at the University of California, Davis, School of Medicine invites applications for a qualified Junior Specialist in general support of molecular, genetic, and biochemical studies related to renal cell biology, metabolic reprogramming, peptide-based therapeutics, and immune checkpoint therapy.

    General responsibilities include:

    The Jr. Specialist will participate in publishable research on the regulation of immune checkpoint proteins in kidney cancer and renal fibrosis. This individual is expected to employ molecular genetic, genomic and biochemical tools to investigate the mechanisms by which metabolic enzymes regulates cell signaling in both renal epithelial cells and kidney cancer cells. The position will involve gene cloning, CRISPR/Cas9-mediated gene knockout, bacterial cell culture, real-time qPCR, cell-based assays, immunochemistry, phospho-RTK array analysis, and measurement of metabolites in kidney tissues.

    The Jr. Specialist will perform experiments under the supervision of a senior postdoc and the PI. He/she is expected to familiarize himself/herself with the current state of knowledge in the field by reading background literature, including that suggested by supervisors and relevant independent study. The Jr. Specialist is expected to understand the rationale and hypotheses being tested, and to discuss experimental design prior to performing experiments with the supervisors. Once trained, this individual is expected to work independently with basic techniques and protocols.

    Overall, the Jr. Specialist should work semi-independently, planning his/her own work schedule and experiments, with oversight by the postdoc and PI. He/she will be expected to participate in the design of the experimental plan and individual experiments. Through the above-referenced duties, the Jr. Specialist will outline and draft sections of the manuscript and/or help to edit the manuscript. He/she will organize and summarize final data in graphical and/or tabular form for presentation, publications and grant proposals. The incumbent may be asked to present study findings at lab meeting and/or Nephrology Grand Rounds and Kidney Research Day as well as contribute to poster presentations. 

    Jr. Specialist in the lab will include the development of laboratory protocols, database design, specimen handling and collection, tissue processing, data entry, and maintenance of regulatory requirements. The applicant will also assist all members of the laboratory with maintaining daily functions including ordering of supplies, and lab safety and will be required to perform tasks in compliance with all regulatory agencies/policies including IACUC, PHS, and OHSS.

    Professional Competence:

    The Jr. Specialist will have the opportunities to attend scientific or scholarly conferences including the ASN Kidney Week and AACR annual meeting.

    The University of California, Davis, Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences is recruiting for a Health Sciences Assistant/Associate Clinical Professor in the clinician/teaching series to serve as a teaching attending in its Outpatient Clinics both in the Child clinic and the Early Psychosis clinics. Experience in coordinated specialty care for first episode psychosis is preferred. Appointment is in the Health Sciences Clinical Professor series. This position will involve supervising child and adolescent psychiatry and general psychiatry residents, fellows, and medical students, as well as serving as the medical director for the early psychosis programs.     The Department of Neurology at the University of California, Davis is recruiting a Translational Imaging Scientist at the Assistant or Associate Professor level. This is a full time faculty position in the tenure track.

    The faculty member will join a dynamic research environment within the Department of Neurology. We seek candidates with a focus on translational neuroimaging investigations (PET and MRI) to study brain aging, cerebrovascular disease and dementing disorders.     Junior Specialist in Orthopaedic Research – McNary Lab

    The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of California, Davis invites applications for a qualified Junior Specialist.

    Research Activity

    Under the supervision of the Principal Investigator the Junior Specialist will support the mission of the laboratory and perform basic science and translational research into articular cartilage tissue engineering, biotribology, and biomechanics and contribute to study design, data analysis, and manuscript preparation and submission. Research duties will involve cell and tissue culture, tissue dissection of bovine stifle joints, histology and immunohistochemistry, biochemistry methods, protein purification, immunoblotting, biomechanical testing and characterization. The Junior Specialist will collaborate with the Principal Investigator, graduate students, and other laboratory personnel in the design, performance, analysis, and publication of research activities involving articular cartilage tissue engineering, biotribology, and biomechanics.     • Laboratory experience in cell and tissue culture and in vitro, benchtop assays
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

    Junior Specialist Cognition, Affect and Psychiatric Diagnoses in Chromosome 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome

    DESCRIPTION

    The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of California, Davis invites applications for 1-2 qualified Junior Specialists to be involved in interdisciplinary studies investigating Cognition, Affect and Psychiatric Diagnoses in Chromosome 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome.

    The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal, communication, and decision-making skills as well as the ability to work independently and as part of a team. This candidate will work closely with Tony Simon, Ph.D. (PI).

    MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

    The candidate for this position will be involved in interdisciplinary studies focusing on questions in Cognition, Affect, and Psychiatric Diagnoses in Chromosome 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome in an effort to understand how the mind and brain is developing in both typical children and those with Chromosome 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome and how differences affect learning, behavior and psychiatric outcomes. The incumbent will be required to exercise discretion and judgment in the execution and interpretation of experiments and of the data derived.

    General responsibilities include:

    I. RESEARCH ACTIVITY (75% EFFORT)

    • Specific research and technical activities will be to perform Clinical Interviews of Psychosis symptoms of individuals with chromosome 22q11.2 deletion syndrome and screening of controls.
    • Interpret results with supervision of clinician.
    • Assist in preparing internal clinical reports based on those interpretations that summarize the clinical symptoms of the participants for research use only (60%),
    • Screen, recruit and schedule participants appropriate for the study (15%),
    • Perform calculations and summarize data according to protocol or as directed (5%)

    II. PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY (15% EFFORT)

    • Attend weekly lab meetings.
    • Attend biweekly Project core staff meetings to review MRI images, discuss progress and be involved in ongoing planning of project activities
    • Attend MIND Institute Research symposia and Distinguished Lecturer series presentations
    • Create and submit conference and/or symposium posters and presentations
    • Contribute significantly as an author to lab publications

    III. UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE (5% EFFORT)

    • Participate in and assist in planning special events related to 22q11.2 deletion syndrome such as the annual 22q at the Zoo event and the MIND Institute 22q11.deletion Annual Family Conference.
    • Participate in other community outreach activities where appropriate in order to present a strong positive image of the MIND Institute and its role in the community
    • Provide mentoring and information sharing with other MIND Institute employees

    BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Bachelor’s Degree in Cognitive/Developmental Psychology, Neuroscience or related field.
    • Ability to be highly organized, creative, work independently with multiple research studies, and have attention to detail necessary.
    • Experience with Excel spreadsheets.

    ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Excellent communication skills and ability to handle sensitive situations with families of children with developmental disabilities.
    • Extensive analytical and critical-thinking.
    • Strong computer and/or statistical skills.
    • Will be required to exercise discretion and judgment in the execution and interpretation of experiments and of the data derived. Must exhibit professional approach to work and attention to detail.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Experience working with developmentally disabled children or adults. MRI in clinical or research settings is highly desirable.
    • Background in Cognitive/Developmental Psychology, Neuroscience desirable.
    SALARY RANGE

    Step 1 - $38,112 annual (based on full time employment), or Step II - $40,656 annual (based on full time employment), commensurate with qualifications and experience.
